The Daily Grind

by Chris Tavener

/

about

'The Daily Grind' is an alternative rock track full of satirical bite as Tavener playfully mocks the misconceptions about coffee drinking in this year's 'costa living crisis'.
It's a song full of dry, witty wordplay and features influences of retro rock and new wave music.

Chris Tavener is a storytelling singer-songwriter from the North West. His varied career has seen him performing support slots for Peep Show's Super Hans and writing a song to sing for charity with national treasure Sir Ian McKellen.
He performed over 300 gigs in his first year touring in 2016 and has since played all over the UK and Europe, as well as at major festivals including Glastonbury, Latitude and The Great Escape.

lyrics

Well I know I'm not the only one
Worse off than they thought they'd be
But I recently heard
How the sums add up
It's funny how I didn't see

It's because I bought a coffee
It's because I bought a coffee
That's why I'm on the breadline, sure sign
I'm going to lose
It's because I bought a coffee
Flavoured caramel and toffee
It's because I bought a coffee that I'm still broke
Singing the blues

I like a cup of Joe with a little bit of froth in
That's why I'll be working 'til they put me in a coffin
I just can't escape from the daily grind
I knew there was a reason why I couldn't ever prosper
I'd be in Puerto Rico if I hadn't been to Costa
It's chocolate syrup lattes that made me blind

It's because I bought a coffee
It's because I bought a coffee
That's why I'm on the breadline, sure sign
I'm going to lose
It's because I bought a coffee
Flavoured caramel and toffee
It's because I bought a coffee that I'm still broke
Singing the blues

I really can't believe that I was such a silly sausage
I bought a frappucino when I could have bought a cottage
Someone stop me now, 'cause I'm out of control
Oh it's a wonder no-one tried to break it to me gently
I got a double shot and now I can't afford a Bentley
'Cause all those ground up beans, really take their toll

Still it's nice to know the trouble's not with wages or inflation
The economic struggles with an ageing population
The cost of student debt is not a real consideration
Baristas are the devil

It's because I bought a coffee
It's because I bought a coffee
That's why I'm on the breadline, sure sign
I'm going to lose
It's because I bought a coffee
Flavoured caramel and toffee
It's because I bought a coffee that I'm still broke
Singing the blues

It's because I bought a coffee that I'm still broke
Singing the blues
It's because I bought a coffee that I'm still broke
Singing the blues

about

Chris Tavener Manchester, UK

Jangly-guitar rock and a biting sense of humour meet in the storytelling songs of Chris Tavener. A deft lyricist with an acerbic wit, Tavener writes his lyrics from the perspective of flawed characters that he draws from 21st century life.

“”An interesting lad with an elastic turn of phrase” – Steve Lamacq, BBC 6 Music

“Nice set. Kinks-y vibes” – Carl Barat, The Libertines
